The Huang Daoyuan 黄衟渊

During the reign of Emperor Renzong of the Yuan Dynasty, Huang Daoyuan was a native of Qiantang (present-day Hangzhou City, Zhejiang Province), and his courtesy name was Gushan.
He once encountered Wei Danqiu, a native of Ying, who taught him the essential methods of cultivating the true self (a core Taoist practice of spiritual refinement) as well as medical techniques and prescriptions. Subsequently, he traveled south to Mount Wuyi and studied under Pan Leijian from Jinhua.

According to Volume 3 of Annals of Xuanmiao Temple: In the first year of the Huangqing reign (1312), Gushan traveled to Wujun (an ancient administrative region, roughly covering parts of present-day Jiangsu Province) and resided at Xuanmiao Temple.
At that time, a local man named Yan Dezhao had long suffered from a chronic and stubborn illness. To pray for recovery, Yan built a chamber at the Qingzhen Altar and enshrined the True Lord Xuanwu of the North Pole (a major Taoist deity revered for protecting believers and dispelling misfortunes). Later, upon hearing of Gushan’s reputation, Yan sought his treatment. His illness was cured immediately. In gratitude, Yan donated the altar to build a hall and invited Pan Leijian to serve as the abbot of this new structure. The Heavenly Master Zhang (the spiritual leader of the Zhengyi School of Taoism) bestowed upon this establishment the name "Qingzhen Taoist Courtyard."
In the thirteenth year of the Zhizheng reign (1353), the imperial court granted it the plaque title "Qingzhen Temple" (elevating its status from a "courtyard" to a formal "temple").
Later, Gushan passed away and was buried right behind Qingzhen Temple. Locals thereafter referred to his tomb as "Tomb of Huang Gushan."
