The Huang Dongyuan 黄洞元
Paul PengShare
Huang Dongyuan (698-792) was a native of Nanyue Mountain (now part of Hunan Province) during the Tang Dynasty.
In his early years, he traveled around Huayang (a region sacred to Taoism, mainly referring to the area around Maoshan Mountain) and maintained a teacher-friend relationship with Master Xuanjing. He once learned the Xing Zhonghuang Furi Method (a specialized Taoist practice focused on internal cultivation and aligning with the sun’s energy).

Later, he went to Wuling (an ancient region in present-day Hunan) and resided at Taoyuan Guan (Taoyuan Taoist Temple). In the ninth year of the Dali era (774), he moved to Zixiao Peak of Lushan Mountain, where he practiced Taoism for as long as ten years.
After that, he settled on Maoshan Mountain and lived in Xiabo Palace. He recited the Dadong Scripture (a core scripture of the Shangqing School of Taoism) every day and studied Taoism under Master Wei (referring to Wei Jingzhao, the 14th patriarch of the Shangqing School on Maoshan Mountain).
He passed away at the age of 95, and the imperial court conferred on him the posthumous title "Master Dongzhen". He was recognized as the 15th patriarch of the Shangqing School of Taoism on Maoshan Mountain.
