Huang Xidan was a native of Shaowu (now part of Fujian Province) during the reign of Emperor Shenzong of the Northern Song Dynasty.
He went by the literary name Zhilizi and practiced Taoist cultivation at Jiulong Taoist Temple in Shaowu. In the fifth year of the Xining era (1072), he founded Wufu Taoist Temple. Due to his pure and rigorous adherence to Taoist precepts, his reputation in the Taoist community grew day by day, and disciples and followers flocked to him.
Later, he was summoned to the imperial capital by imperial decree and served as the abbot of Taiyi Taoist Temple.
