Huang Yixing was a native of Jiangxia (now part of Wuchang, Hubei Province) during the Qing Dynasty.
In his childhood, he studied Confucian classics, was well-versed in Buddhist scriptures, and wrote annotations for sutras such as the Diamond Sutra and the Shurangama Sutra.

Later, he became a Taoist Priest. He deduced and elaborated ten chapters of the Can Tong Jing (The Scripture of Unity and Conformity) and compiled and published The Complete Works of Ancestor Lü (Lüzu Quanshu), which has been passed down to later generations.
