The Huang Yuanji 黄元吉

Huang Yuanji (1271-1325) was a native of Fengcheng, Yuzhang (now part of Jiangxi Province) during the Yuan Dynasty.

His courtesy name was Xiwen, and his literary name was Zhonghuangzi.

He came from a prominent family with a distinguished lineage for generations. According to Records of the Supreme Lingbao Pure Bright Religion (Volume 6): At the age of twelve, Huang Yuanji entered Yulong Wanshou Palace and studied under Revered Master Zhu of Qingyi Hall.

Later, he became a disciple of Master Liu Yu of Xishan, from whom he fully inherited the "Jingyang Dao of Loyalty, Filial Piety, and Pure Brightness" (a core doctrine of the Pure Bright Sect of Taoism). The essence of this Dao lies in the purity and clarity of one’s original mind, while in conduct, loyalty and filial piety are regarded as the most valuable virtues. After inheriting this Dao, Huang Yuanji built three altars—Yuzhen Altar, Yinzhen Altar, and Dongzhen Altar—on Xishan to initiate and teach his disciples.

In the third year of the Zhizhi era (1323), he traveled to the capital to propagate Taoist teachings. In the first year of the Taiding era (1324), he was officially conferred the title of "Master" by imperial decree and appointed as Tidian (supervisor) in charge of the ritual practices and maintenance of Yulong Wanshou Palace.

In the second year of the Taiding era (1325), an imperial edict was issued to bestow another honorific title upon him, but by then Huang Yuanji had already passed away at the age of 55.
