Huang Zhongli was a native of Shuangjing (now Xiushui County, Jiangxi Province) during the Ming Dynasty (1368–1644).

In his early years, he served as a wei (a junior official in charge of local security and military affairs) in Gushi County, Guangzhou Prefecture. Later, he suffered from hemiplegia (paralysis on one side of the body) and thus resigned from his official post to live in his hometown.

A renowned Taoist master known as "True Person Jinhua Jun" said to him: "I can cure this illness, but if you recover, you must become a Taoist Priest." Huang Zhongli agreed to this condition.

After seven days, he was able to walk again. He then went to Qintian Ruiqing Palace to become a Taoist Priest. He resided there for over ten years, and later was promoted to the position of abbot (the head of a Taoist temple), with nearly a thousand disciples under his guidance.

When he was granted an audience with the emperor, his responses to the emperor’s questions fully met the imperial will.
