Huang Ziran was a native of Taiping County during the Qing Dynasty.

His literary name was Qingxu. He was officially registered as a Taoist at Dongyue Guan (Dongyue Temple). He practiced "fuqi bigu" (sustaining oneself with vital energy and abstaining from grain) and "chengxin jinglü" (calming the mind and quieting thoughts) for more than ten years, and thus attained a deep understanding of the profound essence and true principles of Taoism.
