The Hui Yuanmo 惠远谟

The Hui Yuanmo 惠远谟

Paul Peng
Hui Yuanmo (1697–1771) was a native of Suzhou in the mid-Qing Dynasty. His courtesy name was Xuzhong, and his literary name was Danfeng.

He lost his father at an early age but had a passion for reading and could remember whatever he read after just one glance.

When he grew a little older, he entered Yuanmiao Temple and studied under Pan Wu’an. He devoted himself to the Taoist Canon (Daozang) and became well-versed in Taoist scriptures.

At the age of 30, he was appointed to the Dao Ji Si (the administrative office for Taoism in a local area during the Qing Dynasty). In the 9th year of the Yongzheng reign (1731), he was ordered by the imperial edict to take charge of the affairs of Yuhua Courtyard at Longhu Mountain.

In the 11th year of the Yongzheng reign (1733), the Guangming Hall (Brightness Hall) in the imperial capital (Beijing) was completed. Lou Jinyuan served as its abbot, and Hui Yuanmo studied under him as a disciple.

In the 13th year of the Yongzheng reign (1735), after Pan Wu’an passed away, Hui Yuanmo returned to the south and took up the position of abbot of Yuanmiao Temple.

Shortly after, he was appointed Tidian (a managerial official of Taoist temples) of Longhu Mountain. In the 9th year of the Qianlong reign (1744), he was summoned to the imperial capital to assist in Taoist affairs at Guangming Hall and participate in the compilation and revision of The Annals of Longhu Mountain.

In the winter of the 15th year of the Qianlong reign (1750), Hui Yuanmo returned to the south. The emperor bestowed upon him a complete set of Taoist scriptures, which were collected in the Scripture Repository of Yuanmiao Temple. He also oversaw the construction of three pavilions: Yuhua Pavilion, Guanyin Pavilion, and Zhenqing Pavilion. In the 36th year of the Qianlong reign (1771), he passed away due to illness at the age of 75.

He was the author of Xue Yin Gao (Manuscripts of Learning to Compose Poetry).
