Huo Zhizhen was a native of Qiukou, Anyang County (now part of Henan Province) during the Jin and Yuan dynasties. His courtesy name was Mingdao, and his literary name was Jiranzi.

As recorded in The Epitaph of Huo Jiranzi on His Daoist Conduct, Huo Zhizhen had a quiet and indifferent temperament. He became a Taoist priest and studied under Daoist Master Zhongxuanzi. He performed his duties diligently and arduously, showing no sign of reluctance or fear.

Master Zhongxuanzi appointed him to take charge of Daoist temple affairs; Huo Zhizhen managed them in a well-organized and methodical manner, earning praise from both inside and outside the Daoist community. Later, he served as the abbot of Tianqing Palace and held the position of supervisor for Daoist affairs in Zhangde Circuit for thirteen years.

Huo Zhizhen had an elegant and unrestrained demeanor—simple and unadorned in appearance, yet sharp and insightful at heart. When guiding and teaching his disciples, he spoke concisely while making principles clear, and he set an example of moral discipline with his own conduct. In his later years, he was respected for his advanced age and noble virtues, and his reputation in the Daoist community was highly esteemed. He lived to the age of eighty-one.
