Iron Plaque Chen, a native of Fujian in the early Ming Dynasty, originally had the surname Chen, but his given name has been lost.

As recorded in Gefu Tongzhi (Comprehensive Gazetteer of the Capital Surroundings): During the Yongle reign of the Ming Dynasty (1403-1424), he entered Longyang Palace in Fangshan to practice Taoism. Later, he went to Wuyi Mountain, where he met a senior Taoist who taught him the esoteric secrets of the Golden Elixir.

He often hung an iron plaque around his chest and claimed to be able to command thunder and lightning, as well as dispel disasters and relieve hardships. Hence, he was known as "Chen the Iron Plaque".
