Jia Zhixi was a native of Junzhou (present-day Yuxian County, Henan Province) during the late Jin and early Yuan dynasties, and his courtesy name was Yanzhen.

He embraced the Taoist doctrines and practices of the Quanzhen School with sincere and unwavering faith, standing out from the ordinary world with his extraordinary virtue. In the first year of the Kaixing era of Emperor Aizong of the Jin Dynasty (1232), he met Li Zhiduan in Luoshui City, and the two soon became close Taoist friends with a profound bond (literally "irreversible friends," meaning friends whose friendship cannot be broken).

They devoted themselves to Taoist practices to find joy, and sometimes brought food to share with each other. Their friendship was as strong as metal forged together and as fragrant as orchids—they never parted for more than ten years.

Jia Zhixi and Li Zhiduan collected tiles and stones from an old hut on the city wall, using these materials to build a hall and a temple, which they named "Huichong Taoist Temple." They practiced the Taoist art of "Hundun" (referring to the primordial, chaotic state of the universe in Taoism, a practice aimed at returning to one's innate nature) there, and gained considerable fame at that time.
