The Jiang Yuanji 蒋元吉

Paul Peng
Jiang Yuanji (?–998) was a native of Yixing in Changzhou (now part of Jiangsu Province) during the Northern Song Dynasty.
His courtesy name was Jifu, and his literary name was Bixuzi. As recorded in Volume 11 of Mao Shan Zhi (Records of Mao Mountain), in his youth, Jiang Yuanji had an elegant and otherworldly demeanor. He was fond of reading and studied under Cheng Yanzhao, learning the Taoist doctrines of the Shangqing (Supreme Purity) School.

He accompanied his teacher to the imperial capital to reside there in response to the imperial edict. After a long period, he finally returned to Ziyang Guan (Ziyang Taoist Temple). During his life, there were frequent auspicious omens, and he had an extraordinary mastery of the Shangqing doctrines.

He passed away in the first year of the Xianping era (998) and was posthumously granted the imperial title "Mr. Dongxu" (Dongxu meaning "Void of the Grotto").

He was the 21st patriarch of the Shangqing School of Taoism on Mao Mountain.
