Jiao Kuang

Jiao Kuang was a Daoist priest of Maoshan Mountain during the Southern and Northern Dynasties. His courtesy name was Dadu, and his Taoist title was Daoguang.
He practiced Daoist cultivation techniques such as "absorbing the essence of clouds and mists" (a form of qi refinement) and "bigu taixi" (the art of avoiding grain and regulating breath to nurture life force). Later, he retreated to live in seclusion on Huashan Mountain.
As recorded in Volume 4 of Xianyuan Bianzhu (A Compilation of Pearls from the Immortal Garden): Emperor Wu of the Northern Zhou Dynasty admired his Daoist practices deeply, and personally visited his retreat on the mountain to hold an audience and inquire about the Dao.
Subsequently, the emperor ordered the construction of Yuntai Temple at the valley entrance for Jiao Kuang to reside in. Additionally, he had Shangfang Baiyun Palace (Upper Chamber White Cloud Palace) and Zhongfang Taiqing Palace (Middle Chamber Great Clarity Palace) built there.
Jiao Kuang’s renowned disciples included Wang Yan and Hong Xian. Through his efforts, the scriptures and doctrines of the Shangqing (Supreme Clarity) and Sandong (Three Grottoes) traditions of Daoism were thus spread to northern China.
