The Jin Liangzhi 金良之

The Jin Liangzhi 金良之

Paul Peng
Jin Liangzhi (?-1171) was a native of Xiadong during the early Southern Song Dynasty. His courtesy name was Yanjiang. His father served as the Judicial Commissioner of Liangzhe Circuit, and Jin Liangzhi obtained the position of Wei (a local military and administrative officer) of Fengxin County through his father's merit-based recommendation (a system known as "yin" in ancient China).

As recorded in Xiuyu County Chronicles: Jin Liangzhi had little interest in official career. He often pretended to be insane and later resigned from his official post on the grounds of illness. He had no fixed place to reside; instead, he mostly took rhubarb (a type of Chinese herbal medicine) as food while practicing the refinement of golden elixirs (a core practice in Taoist inner and outer alchemy). Sometimes he could go without eating for ten months, yet his complexion always remained ruddy and healthy. Shu Mi (a high-ranking imperial minister in the Song Dynasty) Zhu Pu met him and praised him as "one of the eight hundred immortals."
