Lan Tianyu was a person who lived during the Jiajing reign period of the Ming Dynasty.

He was a Taoist priest at the Tiezhu Temple (Iron Pillar Temple).

At that time, Yan Song was dismissed from his position as Grand Secretary and returned to his hometown. When Yan Song arrived in Nanchang, it coincided with the emperor’s birthday, and Lan Tianyu held a Taoist ritual (jiao) for the emperor.

Censor Jiang Zuo (Note: The given name "做" may be a textual error; common historical names for similar figures include "Zuo" 佐) visited Nanchang to search for folk secret methods. Yan Song presented Lan Tianyu’s various Taoist talismans to the emperor.

Lan Tianyu then received an imperial edict appointing him as "Zuo Yanjing" (a mid-ranking official in the imperial Taoist administration) and was tasked with serving the court using the "Fuluan Zhaohe" technique (a Taoist practice involving spirit-writing and summoning cranes). Later, he developed a close association with the eunuch Zhao Ying and gained great favor from the emperor.

Subsequently, Lan Tianyu was arrested and sent to the judicial authorities on the charge of forging imperial edicts. In the 44th year of the Jiajing reign (1565), he was executed.
