The Laojun's City God Merit and Absolution Sutra 太上老君说城隍感应消灾集福妙经

Paul Peng

The Laojun's City God Merit and Absolution Sutra FULL NAME IS

The Wonderful Scripture of the Supreme Lord Lao on the City God's Responsive Blessings for Dispelling Disasters and Amassing Good Fortune

The original text does not record the author’s name.

Since it mentions "the Thirteen Provincial City God Deities under Heaven", the scripture should have been compiled after the establishment of the Thirteen Provincial Administrative Commissions in the 9th year of the Hongwu reign period of the Ming Dynasty (1376).

The original text consists of one fascicle and is included in theSupplementary Daoist Canon (Xu Daozang).

Purportedly preached by the Supreme Lord Lao, the scripture states that the fates of all sentient beings in the mortal world are governed by the City God Deities, who are "impartial, loyal, and upright—responding to every sincere prayer as a shadow follows its form".

If mortals recite this scripture in rotation and pay homage to the City God and his judges, they can dispel disasters and absolve their sins.

At the end of the text, there are twenty-six four-character verses, as well as theTrue Edict of the City God of the Imperial Capital.
