Judging from its content, it is believed to have been compiled by Taoists between the Tang Dynasty and Song Dynasty.

Consisting of five volumes, it is included in the Methods category of the The Dongshen Section in The Daozang. This book is a compilation of more than ten external alchemy and gold-lead transmutation techniques. Its chapters include The Sealed Container of Life-Sustaining Gushing Spring with Manifest Treasure Spirit Cinnabar, The Method of Refining Vermilion Silver with Xuyuan’s Ninefold Great Elixir, The Secret Formula of the Golden Elixir by the Supreme Ancestor, The Ninefold Transcendent Powdered Great Elixir, The Midday-Midnight Spirit Cinnabar Method, Rihuazi’s Oral Instructions, The Life-Preserving Golden Elixir of the Supreme Microcosm Imperial Lord, Preparation of Medicinal Materials in the Alchemy Studio, Mirror of the Alchemy Studio, Scripture of the White Snow Sacred Stone, and Secret Essentials of the Yellow Sprout Great Elixir. Most chapters excerpt from previous alchemical works, detailing methods of extracting lead and producing mercury from cinnabar, as well as transmuting metals into gold and silver.

The book refers to the sun, moon, Yin and Yang as "Jia and Geng" (Jia representing Yang essence of the sun, Geng representing Yin essence of the moon). It states that cinnabar is generated from the mutual resonance of the essences of the sun and moon (Yin and Yang), from which lead and mercury can be extracted to transmute into gold, silver, and alchemical treasures. The refining methods generally involve first nurturing elixirs with medicinal materials such as sulfur, cinnabar, true lead, and chalk. Then, the elixirs are used to nourish cinnabar in a sealed container to form treasures, or to solidify mercury into gold, or to transmute the five metals into treasures through refinement.
