Lei Daozhi was a figure at the end of the Northern Song Dynasty (960–1127).

He was granted the honor of wearing the Zijin Yu Dai (Purple-Gold Fish Sash)—a symbol of high official status in imperial China—and held the positions of Xiyue Zhidian (Director of the West Mountain [Huashan] Hall) and concurrently Huayin Gongji Guan Zhu (Abbot of the Gongji Taoist Temple in Huayin).

In the 9th year of the Shaoxing era (1139, Southern Song Dynasty), he had a stone stele erected to record the history of Gongji Guan. Even amid the chaos of wars and turmoil (following the fall of the Northern Song), he still cherished the aspiration to restore the Northern Song Dynasty.

The language of his inscription was subtle yet his purpose earnest. When compared with those scholar-officials who shamefully served as vassals (to the new regime), there was a world of difference between them.
