Lei Datong (?–1211)

Lei Datong was a native of Yan'an during the Jin Dynasty.

He adopted the literary name "Hongyangzi" (Master Hongyang). He once ranked first in the local imperial examination for his prose and poetry, and people of his time addressed him by the honorific title "Jieyuan" (a title given to the top scorer in the provincial-level imperial examination in ancient China).
In the 15th year of the Dading era (1175), he paid a visit to Ma Danyang (a renowned Taoist master of the Quanzhen School). The two felt an immediate sense of karmic connection as if they had known each other in a previous life. When Ma Danyang returned eastward to Shandong, Lei Datong stayed behind to manage the ancestral court of the Quanzhen School (located in Zhongnan Mountain).

In the early years of the Mingchang era (1190–1196), he passed through Tengjun (an ancient administrative region, roughly in present-day southern Shandong). Fascinated by the seclusion and serenity of Mount Yishan, he built a Taoist hermitage named Xiuzhen An (Hermitage for Cultivating Perfection) by Xiangshi Stream. He initiated and instructed hundreds of disciples during his time there.

Lei Datong passed away due to illness in the 3rd year of the Da'an era (1211). Accounts of his life can be found in the first volume of Zhongnan Shan Zuting Xianzhen Neichuan (Inner Biographies of the Immortal Sages from the Ancestral Court of Zhongnan Mountain).
