Li Derui was a native of Jiading (now part of Shanghai) in the early Ming Dynasty, with the courtesy name Shiming. He was a Taoist priest registered at Ningzhen Temple and styled himself "Daoist Hepiao" (Crane Gourd Daoist).

Once, he encountered a woodcutter named Li Qingyin, who taught him Master Dou's Flying Needle Acupuncture. From then on, he healed people and saved lives, his fame spreading across the land.

In the first year of the Hongwu era (1368), he was summoned to the imperial court, where he received generous rewards. However, he firmly declined [official positions] and returned to his hometown, making a living by selling medicinal herbs in the marketplace until his old age.
