Li Lingyang was a native of Jingzhao (now part of Shaanxi Province) in the early Jin Dynasty, and his literary name was Lingyangzi (Master Lingyang).

He delighted in the Taoist path of immortality. After encountering an extraordinary person, he was taught the "Great Elixir Secret Method of the Immortal Embracing Unity Talisman Fire" (a core Taoist inner-alchemy technique integrating talismans and fire refining), and he practiced this method for many years.
He was "a friend in the immortal circle" with He Dejin and Wang Chongyang (founder of the Quanzhen School of Taoism). All of Wang Chongyang’s disciples addressed him as "Uncle Shi" (a respectful title for a Taoist master of the generation above one’s own teacher).
