Li Miaoyuan was a native of Nangong (now part of Hebei Province) during the Jin and Yuan dynasties.

According to Records of Qiyun Taoist Temple in Bianliang Circuit, her father passed away early, and she entered Taoism together with her mother to become a nüguan (Taoist nun).

In the 4th year of the Zhongtong era (1263), she went to Bianliang (an ancient city, now Kaifeng in Henan Province) and became a disciple of Ji Zhizhen, a Taoist of the Quanzhen School (Complete Perfection School). She was then bestowed the title "Zhenren Wenchun Deyi Zhichang" (the Immortal of Cultured Purity, Virtuous Benevolence, and Knowing the Eternal).

In the 1st year of the Zhiyuan era (1264), she initially built a small hut (an) to live in. Over the following thirty years, she strived diligently despite being alone, never seeking improper attachments or relying on others unduly. She devoted herself to practicing Taoism, and gradually expanded the hut into Qiyun Taoist Temple.

Taoist nuns came and went (to the temple), and the incense offerings (a symbol of devout worship) flourished tremendously for a time.
