The Li Pengtou 李蓬头

The Li Pengtou 李蓬头

Paul Peng
Li Pengtou was a native of Fengtian (now part of Liaoning Province) during the Qianlong reign of the Qing Dynasty. The Golden Lid and the Lamp of the Heart (a key text on the lineage of the Quanzhen School of Taoism) states that he studied under Yun Dabian and Zhang Pengtou.

In his youth, he was fond of the "Xinzong" (New Sect) founded by Zhang Sanfeng. He traveled and sojourned in the Jiangsu and Zhejiang regions, where he met Li Chijiao (Li the Barefoot) at Biyan on Bian Mountain. Li Chijiao taught him the method of "drinking water and abstaining from grains" (a Taoist ascetic practice of sustaining oneself without regular food). Later, Li Pengtou retreated to seclusion on Mount Lao.

In the 43rd year of the Qianlong reign (1778), he went to Jingen Mountain and formed a close association with Taoist Preceptor Lanyun.

He belonged to the "Xinzong" (Heart Sect) branch of the Longmen Sect (a major branch of the Quanzhen School of Taoism).
