The Li Qingchun 李清纯

Li Qingchun (1615–?) was a native of Jiangxia during the late Ming and early Qing dynasties, and his original name was Xun.

According to Jingai Xindeng (The Lamp of the Heart under the Golden Canopy), his ancestors were engaged in the medical profession. In his childhood, he was considered dull-witted, but he had extraordinary physical strength in his arms. At the age of twenty-three, he met an extraordinary person (a hermit with profound attainments) at Huangheji (Yellow Crane Jetty), after which he mastered the "Shushu Liuyi" (the Six Arts of Divination, a general term for traditional Chinese metaphysical arts including astronomy, calendar-making, divination, and numerology). When he grew older, he also gained a thorough understanding of Buddhist doctrines.

At the end of the Ming Dynasty, he lived in seclusion on Jizu Mountain.

In the 13th year of the Shunzhi reign (1656), he studied under Daoren Jizu (Taoist Priest of Jizu) at Longshu Shanfang (Dragon Tree Mountain Lodge), and thus became well-versed in the profound meanings of Buddhist scriptures (Neidian). In the 17th year of the Shunzhi reign (1660), he formed a mentor-student (junior-senior disciple) friendship with Guan Tianxian. In the 27th year of the Kangxi reign (1688), he traveled from Tibet to Yanshan (the Yan Mountains, a range near present-day Beijing). Initially, he resided in seclusion at Zhaixingya (Star-Picking Cliff) on Xishan (the Western Hills, near Beijing), and people called him "Xishan Fengzi" (the Madman of the Western Hills).

He also often rode a white horse, so people also addressed him as "Baima Li" (Li on the White Horse). Later, he went into seclusion and wandered around the rivers and lakes, mingling with beggars. He was recognized as a figure of the Xinzong Sect (Heart Sect), a branch of the Longmen School (of Quanzhen Taoism).
