Li Rong was a native of Ba Xi (present-day Mianyang, Sichuan Province) during the reigns of Emperor Gaozong and Empress Wu Zetian of the Tang Dynasty.
He was also known by his Taoist title "Ren Zhenzi" and served as a Taoist priest at Yuantian Guan (Yuantian Temple).

As recorded in The Old Book of Tang · Biography of Luo Daozong, during the reign of Emperor Gaozong, Li Rong, together with Kang Guo'an, an assistant instructor at the Imperial University (Taixue), gave lectures and discussions on profound Taoist doctrines, which were highly praised by people of that time.
The Song Dynasty Biographies of Eminent Monks notes that in the Xianqing era of Emperor Gaozong's reign, Taoist priests at Dongming Guan (Dongming Temple), including Li Rong, "often competed with Buddhist monks to argue over the superiority of their respective doctrines".
Li Rong authored Annotations on the Scripture of Ascension to the West and Annotations on the Dao De Jing (in four volumes).
