The Li Suzhou 李素舟

The Li Suzhou 李素舟

Paul Peng
Li Suzhou was a figure who lived during the Jin and Yuan dynasties.

His Taoist title was "the Elder Zhi Zhen" (Elder of Pure Truth). He served as the abbot of Jingming Guan (Jingming Temple) on Wutai Mountain in Yaozhou (now part of Shaanxi Province).

Although Sun Simiao’s On Blessings and Longevity was included in the Taoist Canon (Daozang), it was rarely circulated among the people at that time. Additionally, Li Suzhou felt compassion for the fact that, in his era, far fewer people accumulated virtue while many more accumulated evil. Therefore, in the 6th year of the Xianzong era of the Yuan Dynasty (1256), he had the text carved on a stone stele—aiming to make the work widely available to the world so that it would not be lost, and to persuade people to abandon evil and follow the path of good.

This stone stele was erected in the Shrine of True Person Sun (dedicated to Sun Simiao) on Wutai Mountain in Yaozhou.
