The Li Xicheng 郦希诚

The Li Xicheng 郦希诚

Li Xicheng (1182-1259) was a native of Shuiyu, Guichuan (present-day Huailai County, Hebei Province) during the Jin and Yuan dynasties. He was also known by the given name Xicheng and held the Taoist title "Real Person Taixuan".

As recorded in The Stele of Reconstructing Longyang Palace by Tian Pu: Li Xicheng became a Taoist monk in his youth. He studied diligently and assiduously; later, he was appointed as a supervisor of the Taoist community and propagated Taoist teachings in Shandong.

When Mao Xicong, the Fourth Patriarch of the Dadao Sect (Great Dao Sect), was on his deathbed, he urgently summoned Li Xicheng and entrusted him with inheriting the leadership of the sect. At first, Li Xicheng was unwilling to take on this responsibility and went into seclusion in the mountains, but a large number of followers went with him.

Eventually, he came out of seclusion and reorganized the sect to rectify its declining order. He propagated Taoist doctrines and conducted missionary work in regions including Hebei, Henan, Shandong, Shanxi, and Shaanxi. The influence of the Dadao Sect grew significantly, and Taoist nunneries and temples were established everywhere.

Later, Li Xicheng resided in Tianbao Taoist Temple in Yanjing (later renamed Dadu, present-day Beijing). He gained the favor and respect of Emperor Xianzong of the Yuan Dynasty. The emperor issued an edict to rename the "Dadao Sect" (Great Dao Sect) to "Zhendadao Sect" (True Great Dao Sect), conferred upon Li Xicheng the title "Real Person Taixuan", and ordered him to take overall charge of Taoist affairs across the empire.
