Li Yuangu was a native of Jinan during the Jin and Yuan dynasties.

His courtesy name was Zhongze. By nature, he was quiet and taciturn. When he grew up, he learned the craft of a silversmith—his skills were highly praised by others as exquisite and unparalleled. When the Yuan army invaded the south, Li Yuangu and his three sons were all captured by soldiers. They were taken to Shangdu (the summer capital of the Yuan Dynasty), where Li Yuangu’s family eventually settled.

Li Yuangu once studied Taoism under Qiu Chuji (a renowned Taoist master of the Quanzhen Sect). He was bestowed the Taoist name "Songyan Chunzhenzi" (literally meaning "Pure and True Person of the Pine Cliff"). After that, he left his wife and children, returned to his hometown, and became a Taoist monk by studying under Wang Zhishen, who was styled "Jiranzi" and resided at Wufeng Mountain.

He built a thatched hut on the mountainside and devoted himself wholeheartedly to cultivating Taoism.

From then on, he did not step down the mountain for more than ten years. His attainments in Taoism grew increasingly respected over time, and his fellow Taoists felt ashamed of their own inadequacy in comparison to him.
