Li Zhenyuan was a native of Lujiang (now part of Anhui Province) during the Ming Dynasty.

He styled himself "Xu'an". Initially, he practiced medicine in the marketplace. Later, he received the method of "neiguan zhaoguan" (inner observation and illumination) from Liu Baozhu of Shandong, enabling him to emit a wisdom light and see people through walls. Subsequently, he encountered the True Person Zhang Xujing, who taught him the pithy formulas of Jindan (Golden Elixir). He then built a thatched hut outside the city and devoted himself to cultivating Dao.
