The Lin Moniang 林默娘
Paul PengShare
Lin Moniang, also known as the Mazu Goddess, was a native of Meizhou Island in Putian County, Xinghua Prefecture, Fujian Province, during the Taiping Xingguo era of the Song Dynasty (some sources suggest she was born in the 8th year of the Tianfu era of the Jin Dynasty in the Five Dynasties period).
Her father served as a Du Xunjian (Chief Inspector) in the Song Dynasty.

When Lin Moniang was born, a strange fragrance filled the room, and she did not cry for a whole month—hence she was named "Moniang" (meaning "the quiet girl").
According to legend, at the age of thirteen, she was taught esoteric techniques by Taoist Xuan Tong; at the age of sixteen, she obtained a "Heavenly Book" (a sacred text believed to contain divine wisdom). Endowed with these, she gained the ability to understand the changes of the world and predict good and bad fortune, with all her predictions coming true. She often treated people’s illnesses with her medical skills.
Later, her father and elder brother encountered a disaster at sea. Lin Moniang went to rescue them: her father unfortunately passed away, but her elder brother survived. For this, people praised her as a "filial daughter."
Afterwards, her whereabouts became unknown. Sailors and people engaged in maritime navigation revered her as a sacred deity and called her "Mazu."
