Liu Benming was a native of Xiao County, Anhui Province during the Qing Dynasty.
His courtesy name was Fengpan, and his art name was Yunchao.

He was officially registered as a Taoist Priest at Zhenwu Temple.
He excelled at landscape painting and studied the brushwork of Wu Zhen.
