Liu Daoyuan was a native of Guteng during the Yuan Dynasty.

He entered the Taoist order at the age of seven and studied under Master Li Zhijing, who held the title "Tongwei Dashi" (Great Master of Penetrating Subtlety).

When he grew up, he first learned from Real Person Yang Zhiqing, styled "Yuanjing Zhenren" (True Person of Primordial Purity), and then studied under Great Master Qiu Zhizu, titled "Xizhen Dashi" (Great Master of Radiant Truth). He silently received the "heart seal" (a Taoist term for the esoteric transmission of teachings through mind-to-mind communication) and gained prominent reputation in the Taoist community at that time.

In terms of character, Liu Daoyuan had lofty aspirations and profound insights. Later, he was appointed as Daopan (an official in charge of local Taoist affairs) of Tengzhou, and concurrently served as Tidian (a supervisor) of Yunfeng Wanshou Palace.
