Liu Xuanbo lived during the reigns of Emperor Ruizong and Empress Wu Zetian of the Tang Dynasty.
He resided on Culai Mountain in Yanzhou to practice Taoism. He was fond of the studies of The I Ching (Book of Changes) and Laozi (Tao Te Ching), and was skilled in the techniques of taking herbal elixirs, daoyin (Taoist body exercises for qi cultivation), and breath retention.

He and Wang Xiyi were close friends who both pursued a reclusive life devoted to Taoism. (From The Old Book of Tang · Biography of Wang Xiyi)
