Liu Yuan, styled Bingyuan, was a native of Baodi in Jizhou during the Yuan Dynasty.

In his early years, he became a monk. He first studied under Daoist Master Ba in Qingzhou and thoroughly mastered all the latter's skills.

He was skilled in making clay statues of deities. Later, he was summoned to the imperial palace, where he further learned the Western Heaven Sanskrit-style iconography from Duke Anige. His creative inspiration perfectly integrated with this style, eventually forming an unparalleled artistic craft.

All the famous temples in the two capitals (of the Yuan Dynasty) were crafted by him, and no one in the country could match his talent.

As a result, the emperor twice bestowed palace maids on him as his wives. He was also appointed an official to supervise his subordinates—all official rules and regulations were followed by his team, and no one was allowed to make other deity statues without an imperial edict.

He was granted official titles including Grand Scholar of the Zhaowen Pavilion, Senior Official of Zhengfeng Rank, and Minister of the Secretariat.
