The Liu Zhichun 柳志春

The Liu Zhichun 柳志春

Paul Peng
Liu Zhichun lived during the Jin and Yuan dynasties.

He adopted the literary name "Yunyangzi" (Master Yunyang) and held the Taoist title "Tongxuan Dashi" (Great Master of Penetrating Mystery).
In his early years, he paid respects to Xue Zhiwei and took him as his teacher. Later, he traveled northward and stayed in the Fenjin region (covering parts of present-day Shanxi Province). He served as the abbot of Shenqing Guan (Shenqing Taoist Temple) in Guozhou. In the 7th year of the Yuan Taizong era (1235), when Zhenren Yin Qinghe (Perfected One Yin Qinghe) came to Zhongnan Mountain and traveled to propagate Taoist teachings in the Xinzhou and Guozhou regions, Liu Zhichun went to greet him and subsequently handed over the management of his temple (Shenqing Guan) to Yin.

Liu Zhichun then became a disciple of Zhenren Yin, showing him profound respect and addressing him as "Father".

In the 12th year of the Yuan Taizong era (1240), Liu Zhichun accompanied Qi Qingzhen to Yanjing (the capital of the Yuan Dynasty, now modern-day Beijing). Later, he returned to the ancestral court of Taoism (in Zhongnan Mountain) and greatly promoted the influence and doctrines of Taoism.

Accounts of his life can be found in Ganshui Xianyuan Lu (Records of Immortal Origins from Sweet Water), Zhongnan Shan Zuting Xianzhen Neichuan (Inner Biographies of the Immortal Sages from the Ancestral Court of Zhongnan Mountain), and Shenqing Guan Ji (Records of Shenqing Taoist Temple).
