He lived during the Jin and Yuan dynasties and had the Taoist title "Yunmi Zi" (Master of Cloudy Seclusion). He once served Prince Yongchang as an official in charge of falconry affairs, hence he was commonly known as "Envoy Liu" at that time. Later, he abandoned his family to join the Quanzhen School (Complete Perfection School) of Taoism and lived in seclusion on Mount Lao in Jimo, Shandong.

He was a native of Putai, Shandong, during the Jin and Yuan dynasties. He entered Taoism in his childhood, strictly abided by Taoist precepts, and attained profound Taoist attainments. The imperial court awarded him a purple robe with a golden border (a high honor for Taoist clergy) and conferred on him the title "Great Master Dongzhen" (Master of Penetrating Truth).
