The Liu Zhishi 刘志实

Paul Peng
Liu Zhishi was a native of Changge, Xuzhou (present-day Xuchang, Henan) during the Jin and Yuan dynasties. He became a Taoist priest at an early age and studied under Liu Zhiyong, who was a disciple of Han Zhigu—a prominent student of Qiu Changchun (Qiu Chuji).

Later, Liu Zhishi admired True Person Wang Xiyun of Panshan, so he went to study Taoism under Wang. For three years, he persisted in his practice without slacking off; thus, Wang Xiyun imparted all his Taoist doctrines to him and instructed him to take charge of Yuchen Nunnery.

In the fifth year of the Yanyou era of the Yuan Dynasty (1318), True Person Chengming instructed Liu Zhishi to expand and construct additional halls and buildings. Liu Zhishi toiled day and night, and after several years, the project was completed. Grand Master Dongming named the site Longxi Temple in Huozhou. From then on, Liu Zhishi gained great fame and prestige in the Taoist community, and was bestowed the title "Great Master Yuansu".
