Liu Zhitong was a native of Jiazhou (present-day Jia County, Shaanxi Province) in the early Yuan Dynasty.

Coming from an elite family, he renounced his family to become a Taoist after reaching the age of twenty (the "Weak Crown" year in ancient China, marking adulthood). He studied under Master Chen of the Quanzhen School for over a decade, assisting in the management of the Taoist monastery. In the pursuit of self-cultivation and the exploration of fundamental principles, he never slackened in the least.

He served as the abbot of Qingxu Palace on Gehong Mountain of the Northern Yue (one of the Five Great Mountains in ancient China, referring to Hengshan in present-day Shanxi Province).

In his later years, his disciples intended to prepare a tomb for him (literally "a place for burial"). Liu Zhitong said, "The heaven and earth are but a temporary lodge—why bother with such a thing?" Such was his extraordinary detachment and free-spiritedness.
