The Lü Shoupu 吕守璞

The Lü Shoupu 吕守璞

Paul Peng
Lü Shoupu (?–1710) was a native of Changzhou, Gusu (now part of Suzhou City, Jiangsu Province) during the transition from the late Ming Dynasty to the early Qing Dynasty. His original name was Xie; his courtesy name was Duanxu, and his literary name was Yunyin.

As recorded in Jingai Xindeng (The Lamp in the Golden Hut), his father Lü Zhenji inherited the Qingwei Sect and served as its 10th-generation master. Lü Shoupu became a Taoist priest at the age of 17, and his wife Jiang Yuncheng also became a Taoist nun. They built the Nüzhen Xianyuan (Immortal Nunnery of Female Chastity), where they practiced cultivation.

Lü Shoupu held the view: "For those who study the Dao, merely understanding alchemical formulas without engaging in practical cultivation is like trying to cross a river or lake without a boat or oars."

He then traveled to Baiyun Guan (White Cloud Temple) in the capital (Beijing), where he received the Chuzhen Precepts from Wang Changyue. Soon after, in Wulin (ancient name for Hangzhou), he received the Zhongji Precepts. When he reached adulthood, he received the Tianxian Precepts. He established a meditation hall on Guanshan Mountain in Gusu, where he taught a large number of disciples.

His works, including Xinyin Jing Zhu (Annotations on the Scripture of the Mind Seal), Dongyuan Yushi (Veritable Words from the Eastern Plain), and Fuli Shanfang Shi (Poems from the Fuli Mountain Lodge), were circulated among the public. In the 49th year of the Kangxi reign (1710), he passed on the sect’s lineage to his disciple Lü Wei.

Lü Shoupu was the 24th-generation master of the Qingwei Sect and the 8th-generation precept-master of the Longmen Sect.
