The Lv Zhizhong 吕志忠

The Lv Zhizhong 吕志忠

Paul Peng
Lv Zhizhong was a native of Yicheng (now part of Shanxi Province) during the reign of Emperor Xianzong of the Yuan Dynasty.

He studied under Sun Zhijian, the "Great Master of Void and Tranquility" of the Quanzhen Sect, who resided in Pingyang.

After Sun Zhijian’s death, his disciples scattered. Lv Zhizhong settled in Xiangning, wearing coarse clothes and eating simple food. People of his time praised him for possessing the pure virtue of ancient sages and the inherent qualities of a true immortal.

During that period, the Quanzhen Sect flourished, and the locals turned to Taoist beliefs. Taking this opportunity, Lv Zhizhong had temples rebuilt in Xiangning, where he commissioned the painting of Taoist murals and the sculpting of standing statues of Heavenly Lords. He also renovated Yulian Cave (Jade Lotus Cave). At the top of the mountain where the cave was located stood the "Three Heavenly Gates"; inside the cave, dripping mineral water (referred to as "stone marrow" in ancient texts) had formed stalactites shaped like hanging lotus leaves, and the surrounding rocks were delicate and intricate, intertwined like ropes.

Lv Zhizhong spent eleven years overseeing these projects, and his great undertakings were nearly completed.
