Ma Chengzi was a native of Fufeng (present-day Xianyang, Shaanxi) during the Qin Dynasty.
Feeling disillusioned by the turmoil of the world, he abandoned his family to seek the Dao and pursue techniques for prolonging life and achieving immortality.
Volume 10 of Lishi Zhenxian Tidao Tongjian (Comprehensive Mirror of True Immortals Through the Ages Who Embodied the Dao) records: He wandered through Qishan Mountain, where he encountered the Immortal Yellow Boy, who taught him the method of cultivating the primordial embryo and vital energy. He then entered the Hu 鸣 Mountain in Linqiong, Sichuan, to practice and cultivate.
With unwavering dedication and firm resolve, he moved the immortals, who descended to teach him the divine elixir and instructed him in the combined cultivation method of "using Daoist qi as the inner elixir and medicines as the outer elixir; using meritorious deeds as the inner elixir and metals and stones as the outer elixir". Later, he attained the Dao, became an immortal, and ascended to the rank of a high true immortal.
