Ma Danyang was a native of Dengfeng County in Songyang (now part of Henan Province) during the Yuan Dynasty.

When he grew up, his parents wanted to arrange a marriage for him, but Ma firmly declined. He then retreated to seclusion at Nanyan Peak in Qianqiu Town.

He focused on refining lead to make elixirs, took these elixirs and practiced "bigu" (a Taoist practice of abstaining from grain), and had a particular devotion to the internal alchemy techniques of Huangdi (the Yellow Emperor) and Laozi.

According to legend, he could make himself invisible and change his appearance. Later, he successfully refined the immortal elixir, became an immortal, and ascended to immortality.
