Ma Daoyi was a figure from the late Song Dynasty to the early Yuan Dynasty and a Taoist priest of Sanjing Guan (Three Wells Temple).

After Lü Taigu compiled Collected Essential Texts for Taoist Teachings and Practice, True Person He of Yuntai compiled another work titled Collected Texts on Refining Taoist Teachings, which circulated among the people. The two books each had their strengths and weaknesses.
Therefore, Ma Daoyi integrated these two collections—Collected Essential Texts for Taoist Teachings and Practice and Collected Texts on Refining Taoist Teachings—selected and grouped their similar contents, and rearranged them into a cohesive work. He still named this new work Collected Essential Texts for Taoist Teachings and Practice.
