The Ma Liaodao 马了道

The Ma Liaodao 马了道

Paul Peng
Ma Liaodao was a native of Teng County in Yanzhou (now part of Shandong Province) during the Jin and Yuan dynasties.

His courtesy name was Lingzhen. He studied under Lei Hongyang, a disciple of Ma Danyang (a founding master of the Quanzhen School of Taoism).

Since he shared the same surname "Ma" as Ma Danyang, people of his time gave him the epithet "Little Danyang".

When he wandered as a Taoist hermit to Snow Mountain, he saw that the caves and valleys there were serene and extraordinary. He then built a thatched hut beside a cave and practiced "fuqi daoyin" (a Taoist technique of absorbing vital energy and guiding its flow through the body for health and spiritual cultivation).

Most of the disciples he taught and initiated settled in the vicinity of the cave. His well-known disciple included Chen Daoyi, who had the Taoist title "Chongxianzi" (Master of Reappearing Holiness).

Details of his life story can be found in Account of Yuanjing Taoist Temple and Epitaph of Chongxianzi from Qingxu Palace on His Return to Truth.
