The Ma Weifan 马维藩

The Ma Weifan 马维藩

Paul Peng
Ma Weifan (? - 1577) was a native of Ansu (present-day Xushui County, Hebei Province) in Baoding Prefecture during the Wanli reign period of the Ming Dynasty.

His courtesy name was Jiefu, and his literary name was Jingyuan.

As recorded in Gazetteer of Baoding Prefecture, he was once a local "zhusheng" (a student studying in a government-run school). After encountering an extraordinary person who taught him esoteric knowledge beyond secular learning, he gave up his scholar’s robes, put on Taoist priest’s clothing, and lived on a simple diet of vegetables and water. He focused on preserving his vital energy and maintaining mental concentration, practicing Taoist cultivation without interruption. Many scholars and practitioners of metaphysics from all over the country came to study under him.

He passed away due to illness in the 5th year of the Wanli reign of the Ming Dynasty (1577).
