Ma Yu (1123-1183) was a native of Ninghai in Shandong during the Jin Dynasty. His original name was Congyi, with the courtesy name Yifu; after he began studying Taoism, he changed his name to Yu and his courtesy name to Xuanbao. His Taoist title was Danyangzi (Master of Cinnabar Sun).

In the Taoist community, he was honored as "Danyang Zhenren" (Venerable Danyang).
In his youth, he studied Confucianism and was skilled in traditional Chinese medicine and acupuncture.

In the 7th year of the Dading era of the Jin Dynasty (1167), he and his wife Sun Buer became disciples of Wang Chongyang and joined the Quanzhen (Complete Perfection) Sect of Taoism.

After embracing the Taoist path, he devoted himself to spiritual cultivation, consuming only one bowl of noodles daily. He resolved to go barefoot for life, aspiring to be a "Barefoot Immortal of Penglai and Yingzhou" (referring to legendary immortal abodes in Chinese mythology).

He founded the Yuxian (Encountering Immortals) Branch of the Quanzhen Sect, which took "pure and tranquil cultivation" as its core tenet.

In the 6th year of the Zhiyuan era of Emperor Shizu of the Yuan Dynasty (1269), he was posthumously awarded the honorific title "Danyang Baoyi Wuwei Zhenren" (Venerable Danyang of Embracing Unity and Inaction). He was one of the "Seven True Ones of the North" (a group of seven core disciples of Wang Chongyang who propagated Quanzhen Taoism) in the Quanzhen Sect.

He authored works including Dongxuan Jinyu Ji (Collection of Golden Jade from the Mysterious Profundity) and Danyang Shengguang Can (Brilliance of Danyang's Divine Light).
