The Ma Zhi 马志

The Ma Zhi 马志

Paul Peng
Ma Zhi was a Taoist priest during the Northern Song Dynasty.
He had a thorough knowledge of medicine and medical prescriptions, and once cured Emperor Taizong of Song of a chronic illness.
In the sixth year of the Kaibao era (973 AD), he was ordered by the imperial court to collate and edit herbal medicine prescriptions. He provided detailed annotations and added more than a hundred new types of medicinal herbs, compiling these into Kaibao Xinxingding Bencao (Newly Detailed and Revised Materia Medica of the Kaibao Era) in ten volumes.
Later, he followed the imperial edict to return to secular life and serve as an imperial physician.
