Memorials and Petitions Category

It is the twelfth category among the Twelve Categories in the Taoist scripture classification system.

Taoist Doctrine Essentials·Meaning of the Twelve Parts interprets "Zhang" (memorial) as clarifying and "Biao" (petition) as presenting, referring to clarifying one's sincere intentions and submitting them to the Great Dao.

Thus, it states: "Memorials and petitions include examples such as the prayers for the Nine Fasts and the visits and requests at the Three Assemblies."

Works in this category are mostly memorials submitted to the Heavenly Emperors, green essays (qingci, ritual texts written on green paper), and documents issued by the Heavenly Court, all used during the establishment of fasts and the performance of rituals.
