The Meng Jixu 孟集虚

The Meng Jixu 孟集虚

Paul Peng
Meng Jixu was a native of Hangzhou in the early Yuan Dynasty.

He was not only a Taoist priest but also had a passion for literature; his poems and essays all followed refined literary rules and forms.

He once confined himself at home in the mountains nine times, staying in seclusion for as long as three years. As recorded in Notes on Jixu Academy, he built the Jixu Academy by the Tiaoxi River himself, where he collected thousands of volumes of books. He also resided, studied and exchanged ideas there with extraordinary scholars outside the mainstream academic circle.

People at that time called him "a Confucian scholar in the Taoist community".
