The Meng Zongbao 孟宗宝

The Meng Zongbao 孟宗宝

Paul Peng
Meng Zongbao was a native of Wuxing (now Wuxing County, Zhejiang Province) during the Dade era of the Yuan Dynasty. He held the self-styled literary name "Jixu" and was bestowed with the Taoist title "Dharma Master of Honoring Literature, Embodying Simplicity, and Illuminating Virtue". He was officially registered as a Taoist priest of Dadi Mountain.

During the Dade era, he built a house by the Tiaoxi River. He collected old books and amassed a library of a thousand volumes, turning the house into a place for reading. He also gathered many like-minded scholars to live, travel, and give lectures there. Later, he served as the Supervisor of Yousheng Temple and took up residence on Dadi Mountain. He advocated that "only with an empty and tranquil mind can one seek the Dao" and grasped the essence of "rectifying the mind and sincerity".

He compiled Tongxiao Tuozhi (Illustrated Records of Tongxiao Grotto-Heaven) in six volumes. During the early Ming Dynasty, this work was reprinted by Taoist priests and renamed Dadi Dongtian Ji (Records of Dadi Grotto-Heaven).
